"Take the First Step Towards a Better Body, Better Health and a Better You"
My partner Todd is a keen runner. I’ve always stuck brisk walking, but I have to do a whole lot more walking than he needs to run. He knows I was getting close to completing my exercise and eating plan and offered to add a chapter on the benefits of running.

Running, just hearing the word used to give me nightmares.

Growing up I was always a bigger kid, even though I loved and played sport all the time. Problem was I never really enjoyed the running side of sport, because of my tendency to be big.

In my early twenties I decided that enough was enough. Being big didn’t help with my sport and it didn’t help me in other aspects of my life, it was time to lose weight. But how was I going to do it, I had tried and failed so many times before. I decided to eat well, lift weights but best of all I decided to run.

At first I didn’t want to do it, but after a while of frequent running I was finding I was losing weight, my standard of fitness was dramatically improving and I was actually enjoying it. That’s right, I was enjoying running, even to the point where I looked forward to it each time.

After 6 months of this I was the fittest I had ever been, my sport had improved out of sight and best of all I was 13kg’s lighter. Running was not the only thing I did to help me lose weight but it certainly had a huge contribution towards it.

We all know to lose weight we need to exercise and getting a good cardio workout is part of that exercise routine. I personally think that running is the best way of doing this. I’m not going to lie to you and say it’s easy, because it is not, especially when you first begin. You will sweat, get out of breath and your muscles will hurt. But like they say no pain, no gain.

There Are Many Benefits to Running.

• It increases your heart rate, getting precious blood, nutrients and oxygen to your muscles. Over time it will strengthen your heart which will increase cardio output (amount of blood that gets pumped with each beat) and make it more efficient. Your resting heart rate will lower when you are in rest mode. Will also increase your lung capacity (amount of air your lungs can hold) which in turn will increase the amount of oxygen that can be transferred to the blood.

• Works and strengthens many muscle groups, especially your leg muscles

• Increases your overall standard of fitness. Helps to improve other aspects of life including sport and leisure activities

• You don’t have to do it for long periods to get good results. Of course it depends on your level of fitness but generally you should do about 20-30 minutes running at least every second day. As your fitness increases so will the amount of time you run.

• It is inexpensive; you don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment. All you need is a good pair of running shoes and a place where you can run

• Best of all it helps you to lose weight because it is a great way of burning calories. It also sets of your metabolism which will keep working long after you have finished your run.

• There is nothing like the feeling after you have finished your run, showered and sat down to relax. You feel great because your body and mind have been revitalised and you know that you have done a good thing for yourself. You are one step closer to achieving your fitness and weight loss goals.
