Reviews of Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle? I HATED it!
If you are interested in nutrition and fat loss in any way, chances are you have heard of a book called Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle by Tom Venuto.
There is a reason why you have probably heard of it, it’s the biggest selling nutrition and fitness eBook in Internet history. In fact, it is one of the biggest selling eBooks of all time.
When I first heard about Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle, I’d had some weight loss success of my own. I had my weights and low impact cardio workout routine which I enjoyed (because it was nice and gentle), and I was on the latest fad diet of the time, Atkins, of which I was an avid supporter. I was constantly on induction, and ne’er a carb did pass my lips. Carbs were the evildoers, waiting in the shadows to leap in true kamikaze fashion straight onto my waist and stomach, never to leave, no matter how much cardio I did.
So when I got the book, printed it and ‘read’ it all the way through, I hated Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle! With its straight talking, no-nonsense, plain English style informing me that carbs were not actually the enemy, and my cardio based routine was woefully inadequate, I shut the binder on it and threw it up into the dark purgatory of the top of my wardrobe, slamming the door on what I thought was just more wasted money.
“Atkins has it right dammit!” I raved. “He was lucky I exercised at all, because I don’t need to! I can eat whatever I want to, as long as it’s not carbs!”
I can eat whatever I want to, and I’ll still lose weight… right?
Six months later, still on induction, and having been at a plateau for the last five, my friend made a shocking announcement.
"I’m getting married in three months, and I want YOU to be my bridesmaid!"
Outwardly I was thrilled, but inside I was terrified. I had failed miserably to lose the weight Atkins said I would following his diet religiously. My workout routine had fallen by the wayside and I was lucky if I made it twice a week.
The simple fact of the matter was whenever I got to the gym, with no carbs in my system, my available energy was zero. Halfway through a low impact class I’d feel faint and dizzy. When I tried to lift a weight, my arms shook so much I looked like a recovering alcoholic. When (much to my embarrassment) I fainted in the shower, falling out the door onto the floor, I finally thought, ok, this isn’t really working out for me.
With the thought of a million photos being taken of me in all my voluptuous glory racing through my head, a cold fear with the brilliance of a thousand flash bulbs gripped me. I was desperate, so I did what most people do, probably what you are doing right now, I hit the internet looking for answers.
Time and time again, Tom’s book was coming up. “It’s fantastic!” They said. “It’s a breath of fresh air!” They said. “I’ve been approached by ________ fitness magazine!” They said. “Alright!” I said. It’s time to get this book out, open my mind and really read what this guy has to say.
So out of the cobwebs and dust it came. I spent most of the day reading (it’s an in-depth book!). With a new view on right and wrong, a light slowly went on in my brain. Instead of skepticism and mockery, I started to feel elated, like there really was an answer, like something may actually, finally work.
That night, I started right at the beginning again. I spent a few hours defining goals, and deciding on affirmations. As Tom says, “You can’t hit a target in the dark,” which is exactly what you are trying to do without goals.
Coming from the ‘one size fits all’ school of thought, I was astonished to find Burn the Fat actually provides THREE different nutrition programs, starting with the basic fundamentals. In one particular chapter Tom categorises the three body types, one of which fit me to a tee. It also helped me understand why my best friend stayed around 120 pounds no matter how much she ate, while I just looked at food and put on weight.
I was then able to base my fat loss nutrition strategy for the body type that suited me best.
Once again with my workouts, I was blindly going to classes and expecting to burn fat as efficiently as I could. With 6.6 billion people on this earth, every single one of us being absolutely unique, how could anyone think that we could all go to the gym, do exactly the same thing, and expect the same results? This notion really is as ridiculous as it sounds!
Happily, Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle had not one, but FOUR training programs. And within each of these four training programs there were TWO schedules, one for people who were doing their design degree that year (like me) and some for the not so time challenged. Out of the eight routines, I was able to put something together that suited my body type perfectly and didn’t interfere with my hectic schedule.
Obviously, Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle works, as here I am today, 40lbs lighter, much happier, with more confidence than you can shake several sticks at.
So while the critic in me wants to fault the book in some way, there really is nothing I can say that is negative about this program. I’ve seen some say “It’s too long!” or “There’s too much information!”
Are you kidding me? How can you have too much information? A book can’t be too long, only too boring. If you're interested in health, fitness and nutrition (which obviously you are, or you wouldn't be here), and you aren't completely brainwashed by the latest hype-fueled fad, then reading this information is an absolute joy. I like to learn, so this book appeals to my curious nature down to the ground.
If there is one thing I do think, it's that this program is not for everyone.
If you are still caught up in the quick fix (like I was), if you still believe the hype-mongers that there is something out there you can take at night and wake up thin (like I did), if you haven’t faced the facts that there is no ‘secret’ to safe, permanent weight loss (unless the secret is hard work), then this program is not for you.
If you are ready to face the challenge however and turn your body in a fiery fat burning furnace in record time, in the process developing healthy habits that will stick with you for a lifetime, then this is the nutrition and exercise plan for you.
